It is simply revolting. Like really, really!
What?
The fact that people these days claim to be open-minded. The truth is they have all the possibilities to be so. All the information on the internet, easy access to it for free… They could also meet and understand other cultures, nations… They don’t. Why? Lack of time? Maybe. Lack of interest? That may also be the case. Fear of the unknown? Most definitely.
So, those who are afraid to dive into the new, the unknown, how can they claim open-mindedness? Vision?
Moreover, the more clamped and closed some are, the more those around them appreciate them. “He’s a guy in his place”. That is, I think, because such people are reliable, predictable. They will not represent a challenge, they will never stand up to authority, they will never take risks. They are good puppies to have around, dangling their tails happily inside that fake, artificial courtyard they themselves helped build.
But they bite and bark behind the backs of those unlike them. Because that’s human nature. If you don’t have the backbone to be yourself and the courage to hold your head high, then why let others do it?! Better fill them with frustration and doubt. Maybe then they will quiet down and be stuck in the same place like everyone else. They will fit in. And we would love that. Because we are open-minded, but we don’t like those who are different!
And of course, we always have the most honorable excuses: “I am thinking of your own good”. Best intentions pave the road to Hell. Always. Because, in theory, we should be able to make our own decisions. But! There is always someone out there that has the best intentions and gives advice or expresses opinion. And, however tough you are, they plant the seed in your mind and heart, which means they are influencing your process of decision making. And they do so with their limited personal experience, which is not the same with yours. They are biased, they lack all the data, and still they give you their advice.
I am not saying that these people are to blame. It’s how they are. And they should never have to justify or defend what they are (unless they are criminals of some sort, but that’s another story). Remember that bad boy in class that always spoke his mind? Teachers punished him, but we, the class mates, looked at him with respect and maybe a bit of fear. But we never tried to be him. “I couldn’t say that. I’ll be punished.”
So why would a free man, untangled, willing to take a risk, do something new, and so on, justify himself? Why would walking straight, chin forward and head high be judged as wrong? In the end, those who can do it are amazing persons. And no matter how they are different from us, how they challenge our understanding, how they achieve their goal of being happy and proud humans, they shouldn’t be judged, but cheered at for having something most of us lack: the balls to break self-imposed limitations.
Don’t get angry if your open minded. They have a right to exist as much as anyone.
At least you can try and make them see your point. If that does not work then ignorance is bliss.
There’s alot of robots out there in higher places. Don’t forget that they have a place there. What they don’t know is not to speak anything but robot
cheers
Nice piece Anca, you wrote it perfectly described. And you were right I did enjoy this written piece.
It’s very hard for most people to have empathy or understanding in perspective of another person. Every once in a while you will meet someone and have high hopes of this person having the brain to understand you and many ways except for 1 choice you make later in life this person dissapoints you.
Because its hard to find someone who suits you perfectly. As someone will always have its flaws and its just badluck that they have a flaw in empathy like many other people…
People will more then likely only understand someone elses way of being or a choice they have made if they have been in a similar situation. If they havent been in a similar situation or choice you had to make and yet they are judging the situation negatively…. Its just ignorance talking.
Its the real true open minded people that bring chance to the world. People who think beyond a picture. For example racism used to be pretty common. It took allot of courage from open-minded people who didnt judge to speak up and make a change to the world.
Open minded people have been lecturing and teaching crown animals of people for many centuries. So always be yourselve as its your life and you cant be anyone else but you. And miracles like you lead diffecult lifes because not many people have the brain to understand.
That is the idea. No one should be angry or should judge anyone based on their choices
I appreciate the “steady” ones as much as the “risk takers”. There is no anger in that piece
I was laughing all day thinking about this post. It’s just unprofessional to put as many smiley faces in the text as I should have. First 2 or 3 would have been in the title rofl.
Yes, indeed. Most people are likely to be open-minded as well as square-heads, depending on the situation. While some are open to new ideas in their own life, they may not accept them for their peers. As it is the case with parents that had crazy youths but want to prevent their children from having the same and learning from their own mistakes. They do this because they know and understand the risks, but they forgot the feeling of wanting to take a risk, to do a stupid thing. But, wearing the shoes of someone else is never easy.
Then there is also the other side: the risk-taker, the world-changer. They speak their mind, but do they think about the consequences? Sometimes all that’s needed is a word to start a war. I prefer a non-violent change, and that is possible if those who want to bring it are patient. Society never reacts well to ground-shaking ideas or actions.
On the other hand, without the crazy, open-minded, risk-taking people, there would be too little change or none, no innovation, discovery or creativity. When their numbers grow, it is, in my opinion, an indication that something is very wrong. Because you can only compare the openness of one’s mind to the obtuseness of the world they live in.
Oh oh, I never said I was open minded. And only those that claim to be open, but aren’t, are annoying.
Not all the open-minded people bring good influence I agree. But you have them in all shapes and sizes
insane & sane… perhaps a perfect person is a utopia
Might be, but I think we should try to reach that perfection.
Perfect is not a option. I like imperfection.
Something to be surprized by.
We are human, and by nature imperfect.
In a world with so many rules, imperfection sounds better for me.
And this is said by an perfectionst like me. At least at work
A long day ending….i feel so thin….
Maybe i should get a blog going
cheers
